ETF ignites the flame for a sweat-free Olympics

On June 12, the Ethical Trading Action Group (for which MSN serves as the secretariat) and its counterparts in British Columbia brought together 60 representatives of Olympic stakeholders for the 2008 Ethical Trading Forum in Vancouver. Together, they discussed and debated ways to improve working conditions in China and other countries where Olympic-branded products are made, and how to ensure that the 2010 Vancouver Olympics are sweat-free.

Tell Primark not to cut and run

Labour Behind the Label is calling on Primark to reverse its decision to cut and run from three Indian suppliers in advance of a BBC Panorama investigation. Panorama has reportedly uncovered the widespread use of subcontracting in the manufacture of embroidered goods, including the employment of home workers under extremely bad conditions and possible instances of child labour.

US: Workers on Hunger Strike Say They Were Misled on Visas

The Indian workers say they were deceived by Signal International and labor recruiters when they paid as much as $20,000 for visas they believed would allow them to work and live permanently with their families in the United States. In fact, the H-2B visas are for short-term contracts.

GLOBAL: Union Takes Anti-Buyout Campaign Worldwide

Beginning Wednesday, the Service Employees International Union, one of the country?s biggest unions, will call upon people to attend protests on July 17 in 100 cities in 25 countries. The rallying cry will be: Take back the economy from buyout firms that the union says have exploited tax loopholes to amass great wealth at others? expense.
