In January of 2006, New Balance conducted a factory inspection at the Di Chang Factory (Factory No. 5) at the Li Kai Group in Dongguan, Southeastern China. Workers were forced to prepare for their arrival by gathering in huge color-coded assemblies and chanting slogans for the inspectors. For days before the New Balance inspectors arrived, workers had to wake up early to go outside and practice. The Di Chang workers were forced to chant the following:
New Balance, New Balance is the number one brand!
Li Kai, Li Kai is number one in the shoe industry!
Di Chang, Di Chang has the most accomplished and meritorious manufacturing!
Secretly, though, the workers made up their own chant:
New Balance, New Balance is the number one hirer of prostitutes!
Li Kai, Li Kai has the lowest wages!
Di Chang, Di Chang manufactures crap!
